The largest Hawaiian Island is Hawaii, better known as the Big Island. Dominated by two massive volcanic peaks which are snow capped in winter, the Big Island is the most dynamic of the Hawaiian Islands. Gorgeous beaches and world champiomnship golf courses on the west coast, dramatic valleys and waterfalls on the north and east coast, the active Kilauea Volcano in the south, excellent game fishing and snorkelling and the most extensive archaelogical sights, the Big Island has something for everyone. The Big Island too has its own stretch of luxury beach resort complexes with stunning golf resorts on the Kohala Coast, as well as being a popular bed and breakfast and vacation rental destination in the rural hills of South Kona and Waipio where coffee and taro farming dominate.

Kailua Town (also known as Kailua-Kona), sits in the middle of the sunny west coast and has the islands main airport. Kailua is a small attractive fishing seaside town with lots of accommodation from large resorts to condominium and timeshare apartments, as well as numerous bed and breakfast and vacation rentals in the coffee and macadamia nut farming communities in the foothills of Hualalai (8,271 ft) and Moana Loa (13,677 ft) volcanoes extending to Captain Cook in the south. The Kohala Coast, extending north from Kailua Town, has the islands most equisite beaches and mega-resort golf complexes. This stretch is often referred to as the Gold Coast.

Waimea (also known as Kamuela), in the North, is the traditional cattle farming region where you'll find country style vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts in the rolling grasslands. The north coast is a good base for sightseeing with easy access to the beaches along the West Coast, hiking trails in the Waipio Valley along the north coast and further east, to the spectacular Hamakua Coast.

The commercial town of Hilo, on the wet rainforested South East Coast, has the largest port and one of two domestic airports. Hilo is a functional town with a few hotels alongside the beach-less oceanfront and a good selection of guesthouses, bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals in the hills. The high rainfall (mostly late afternoon) is more favourable for the areas greatest attraction, the dramatic Hamakua coast to the north with its lush rainforest, many cascading waterfalls, tropical gardens and coastal cliffs. Hilo is also a good base for exploring Volcano National Park, about 30 miles to the south and west.

The South Coast is wild and dominated by the active volcanoes and lava fields. Volcano Village, about 7 miles inland from the south coast and 4000 feet in eleavation, has lots of accommodation from bed and breakfasts to cabin lodges. The rural district of Kau at the southern tip of the island is one of the most traditional Hawaiian regions and has just one small resort and several small guesthouses / bed and breakfast accommodation.
